Due to the closure of Tambor Ferry trips between the ports of Puntarenas and Paquera, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) announced that the number of trips to the Nicoya Peninsula will increase to fulfill demand.

On Tuesday, the ferry operating trips across Golfito Gulf between the beaches of Puntarenas and Paquera crashed into the landing port, causing damage to both the ship and the pier.

Trips along the Puntarenas - Paquera Route are canceled until the dock and ship are repaired, which would take around two months, according to officials.

To prevent ferry client delays, the second route available to the Nicoya Peninsula, specifically between Puntarenas Port and Naranjo Beach, is to continue operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The directive allows for additional trips between the two ports over the two months required for fixing the Paquera Beach pier.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the ferry captain to lose control of the ship and crash into the landing area.

To take the Tambor Ferry, drivers have first to take Route 27, which connects the provinces of San José and Puntarenas, before taking the ship from Puntarenas to Naranjo Beach. The trip takes around one hour.

Due to the closure of La Amistad Bridge, which is the primary means of accessing the north Pacific Coast, the ferry service is one of the alternative routes to Guanacaste Province.

The bridge was closed on Monday, April 1, for rehabilitation work, which includes restoring the supports at the bases, replacing the segments that connect the asphalt slabs and repairing the towers' top levels.
