The Tambor Ferry discontinued trip services across Nicoya Gulf, between Puntarenas and Paquera beaches, after crashing with a section of the dock structure on Tuesday, confirmed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT).

According to police, for reasons that are now being investigated, the ferry captain lost control of the ship and was unable to avoid colliding with the Paquera Beach dock structure.

Experts from the Maritime Transport Division conducted a preliminary inspection of the Paquera facility and decided that the main damage was at the port's base, making it impossible for the ferry to continue docking there.

To prevent a total stoppage of ferry service between Puntarenas and the Nicoya Peninsula, the ship will continue to operate trips between Puntarenas' ports and Naranjo Beach.

To take the Tambor Ferry, drivers have to first take Route 27, which connects the provinces of San José and Puntarenas, before taking the ship from Puntarenas to Naranjo Beach. The trip takes around one hour.

Due to the closure of La Amistad Bridge, which is the primary means of accessing the north Pacific Coast, the ferry service is one of the alternative routes to Guanacaste Province.

The bridge was closed on Monday, April 1, for rehabilitation work, which includes restoring the supports at the bases, replacing the segments that connect the asphalt slabs and repairing the towers' top levels.
