More than
1,000 people from Venado
Island, located
in the Nicoya Peninsula, are getting
stronger broadband fiber optic internet
access with speeds greater than 100
megabytes. According
to the Electricity Institute (ICE), the
technological advancement was carried
out as part of the National
Telecommunications Fund, which has the
goal of reducing the digital divide in
public schools and colleges in the
country. The
State-owned company Kolbi was in charge
of the installation of the internet
network and antennas.
Engineers had to build underwater pipes to carry the fiber optic cables from Lepanto Beach to the island, a distance of 670 meters. The Institute has never done anything like this before, according to authorities.
The country continues to make progress in improving technology accessibility. Recently, the institute installed more than 47 internet antennas in eleven indigenous areas across the country.
