The infrastructure internet project valued at more than $72 million aims to improve internet access in the country, announced the Public Electricity Institute (ICE).
According to the institute, the plan is the third stage of the New Generation Access Network (RANGE) Project, which deploys fiber optic networks in 98 cantons over the country.
Of these
52,000 places located in the Greater
Metropolitan Area (which is the area made
up of cities on the outskirts of San José
such as Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago)
will get an upgrade on internet services,
as well as about 46,000 places access
improvements will be carried out in rural
zones.
The project includes the purchase and installation of a specialized high-tech equipment network in places where a previous study had established a lack of internet.
Authorities expect in two years the project will be completed.
According to the authorities, the program created in 2015 has allowed internet and television access through fiber optics to around 250,000 residential clients and 15,000 companies.
The country continues to make progress in improving access to new technologies. Recently, Nokia, the Finland-based multinational telecommunications corporation was hired by the institute to carry out the implementation of 5G technology in the country.
