Holy Week,
observed from April 13 to 20, offers a unique
opportunity for visitors and
international residents to experience
Costa Rica’s deeply rooted
traditions. Easter
celebrations in Costa Rica blend
Catholic rituals with local customs
passed down through generations. Throughout the country,
towns and villages come alive with
religious ceremonies, vibrant
processions, and festive markets. While Holy Week is
marked nationwide, each region adds its
own flair. In many areas,
locals dress in traditional robes and
walk historic streets carrying religious
statues and symbols in elaborate
processions. The Catholic
Church, led by the Archdiocese of San
José, the oldest Catholic organization
in the country with more than 100
churches, organizes Holy Week activities
throughout Costa Rica. The Archdiocese
welcomes the public to attend its
events, which include Mass, outdoor
processions, and prayers held in
churches across every town. In downtown San
José, processions will feature live
performances depicting scenes from Jesus' final days,
accompanied by music from the San José
Municipal Band.
On Monday, April
14, the Way of
Sorrows (Via Crucis) begins at 7 p.m.,
starting at the Borbon Market and ending at the Municipal
Handicrafts Market. On Tuesday &
Wednesday, April 15–16, the Holy Farm
Blessing will take place at 8 a.m. in San José's Central Park and other central
parks around the
country. A live concert
featuring the Zuriel Catholic Chorus and
Philharmonic will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Metropolitan
Cathedral. On Maundy
Thursday, April 17, the procession
begins at 8 p.m., proceeding from the Metropolitan
Cathedral to the Dolorosa Church. On Good Friday,
April 18, two major processions are
planned. The first event
begins at 10:30 a.m., a procession will
leave the Soledad Church and head to San José's Central Park, commemorating
the crucifixion of Jesus. Later, at 6
p.m., the Holy Burial Procession will
circle the streets surrounding the
Metropolitan Cathedral. On Holy Saturday,
April 19, the Virgin Mary Mourning
Procession begins at 4 p.m., starting at
the Soledad Church and ending at the Metropolitan
Cathedral. On Easter Sunday,
April 20, the final procession of the
week begins at 10 a.m., departing from the Merced Church and ending at the Metropolitan
Cathedral to commemorate
the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Celebrating Easter
in Costa Rica is a meaningful and
enriching experience, with each city and
region offering its own unique take on
these sacred traditions.
