The Public Services Regulatory Authority (Aresep), has given its approval for the new prices of gasoline, diesel  and LPG fuel gas.

According to Aresep, which is the public organization in charge of setting the cost of public services, the new prices were requested by the Costa Rica Oil Company (Recope).

Recope, the state-owned corporation in charge of importing, distributing, and selling fuels in Costa Rica, stated that the new rates were authorized based on expenses recorded in the gasoline and liquefied gas markets when the products were acquired. Gasoline prices increase somewhat per liter. However, there will be a reduction in the price of diesel and LPG gas.

Authorities report a rise in gasoline costs despite a decrease in the dollar-colones exchange rate from ₡546 per $1 on May 1, 2023, to ₡509 per $1 on May 1, 2024.

The new prices will be as follows:

  • Super gasoline increased to ₡742 colones per liter, about $1.48.
  • Plus 91 gasoline (known as regular) increased to ₡721 colon per liter, about $1.44.
  • Diesel decreased at ₡638 colones per liter, about $1.25.
  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), for use in heating appliances, cooking and vehicles, decreased at ₡7,672 colones per 25-pound gas cylinder, about $15.34.

The new rates go into effect tonight after being published in the official government newspaper La Gaceta.
