The International Police agents (Interpol) detectives detained a male Ecuadorian citizen, surnamed Pinto (51), who was wanted by the United States.

According to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), the U.S. Department of Justice filed an international arrest order in 2023 for Pinto as a suspect in a fraud and money laundering conspiracy case.

He was taken into custody at the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province after arriving from Quito, Ecuador.

The suspect was taken to the Immigration Apprehension Center in San José, where he is waiting for the extradition procedure to the U.S. to be completed.

Recently, Interpol arrested a male Canadian citizen, surnamed Liam (28), as a suspect in a misappropriation case.

As of April, Costa Rica has deported 350 foreign people, according to statistics from the General Directorate of Migration.

Last year closed with almost 1,000 foreigners deported. This figure is a 47% increase over the 664 individuals deported in 2022.
