Over 290,000 tourists arrived in the country via air in February, according to the Tourism Institute.


The Juan Santamarķa International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province welcomed approximately 190,000 travelers, representing an 11% increase over the same time in 2023.


Officials at the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste Province reported the arrival of over 100,000 tourists, a 28% increase over the previous year.


The United States remains the most popular nationality visiting Costa Rica. Authorities reported around 161,900 U.S. tourists, accounting for 55% of the total number of visitors and representing a 19.6% rise over the same month in 2023.


Furthermore, nearly 49,000 Canadians, representing a 10% rise, and 6,000 Mexicans, representing a 20% increase in visitors in February.






In addition, as of February, officials had recorded almost 78,000 European tourists. Of them, the bulk came from France (29%), the United Kingdom (22%), and Germany (20%), among others.


The institute has launched many international advertising campaigns encouraging visitors to Costa Rica. Recently, the Tourism Institute was promoting the country as a tourist destination in Austin, Texas, U.S.A.


The average spending of tourists who visited Costa Rica in 2023 increased by $300 from 2022, according to authorities.


Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica.  The country reported a new tourism record reached in 2023, with more than 2,4 million travelers visiting the country.
