Reckless driving is on the rise. As of September, about 47,000 drivers were fined for breaking Traffic Law such as incorrect parking, drunk driving and speeding among many other faults, announced the Ministry of Public Transport.

Of these, more than 23,600 drivers were fined for incorrect parking. The most common types of illegal parking are being over five meters or closer to the ramps for people with disabilities, being within five meters of hydrants, being in corners, being in an area where there is a parking prohibition sign, blocking the entrance to garages, being over the sidewalks and blocking the exit of emergency vehicles such as firefighters and ambulances, among others. They are required to pay a $120 penalty.

Also, almost 6,000 drivers were fined for carrying children under 12 years of age without safety devices such as carrycot or booster seats based on their weight and size. They are fined $470 plus the penalty of four points reduced on their driving record.

More than 4,700 drivers were fined $110 for not complying with the mandatory annual technical inspection of vehicles.

Police identified over 1,500 positive DUIs with more than 0.75 grams of alcohol in their systems. These drivers committed the "A-Level" fine, meaning they were arrested and their vehicles were impounded. DUI drivers are fined approximately $700, plus an extra penalty of 6 points reduced on their driving score.

When a driver is penalized with 6 points on their driving record, their driver's license is suspended. They are forced to retake the driving course and score a minimum of 70 points out of 100 to renew their driver’s licenses.

Speeding is another issue for police. There have been over 3,500 drivers fined for driving over 80 miles per hour. This fine costs about $690 in addition to the 6-point penalty on the driver's license.

Recently, Congress approved a new reform that modifies traffic legislation and raises penalties for drivers detained for street racing.

Texting, talking on the cell phone, and carrying pets on laps, are some of the reckless maneuvers among the 3,400 fines of about $150 each.

Also, over 2,800 drivers were fined for driving without having a driver's license. Drivers should pay a $700 fine plus a penalty of 6 points on their driving record.

So far this year, from January to September, there were 375 deaths in traffic accidents. Of these, 187 were motorcyclists which is equivalent to 49% of fatalities.

Last year closed with more than 480 deaths in traffic accidents.

Police call on drivers to respect the law and take precautionary measures to avoid accidents. People can report any case of reckless driving to the 911 emergency line.
