Bill number 23334, which modifies traffic legislation and raises penalties for drivers detained for street racing, was adopted by Congress by 48 majority votes.
The reform will allow a penalty for a driver who gets caught participating in street racing and would lose their driver's license for three or four years.
Furthermore, the new reform will allow authorities to impose the sentence automatically, without needing a prior trial.
In addition, the new regulation bans the option of completing community service to minimize the sentence duration.
The new reform orders the driver's license application procedure will be allowed until the penalty term has fully expired.
The current law allows drivers arrested for street racing to face a one-year license suspension. However, to be proven guilty, a trial must be convened.
According to the Ministry of Public Transports, as of September, there have been over 3,00 drivers fined for driving over 80 miles per hour. This classed as an " A-Level" fine cost about $690 in addition to the 6-point penalty on the driver's license.
When a driver is penalized with 6 points on their driving record, their driver's license is suspended. They are forced to retake the driving course and score a minimum of 70 points out of 100 to renew their driver’s licenses.
Last
year closed with more than 480
deaths in traffic accidents.
