Delegates from the Tourism Institute (ICT) recently promoted the country as a top travel destination at the Outdoor Adventure Show in Toronto, Canada.

The event, held at the International Center, is the largest tourism fair in Canada, showcasing everything from vacation packages to outdoor gear.

The fair targets active travelers who enjoy sports and outdoor activities, ICT officials said. Many Canadian tourists, eager to escape harsh winter conditions, seek destinations where they can explore new cultures and relax in nature.

Visitors at the event learned about Costa Rica’s adventure tourism offerings, including zip-lining, surfing, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking.

The institute noted that Canada represents a key market of more than 3 million potential tourists, mainly from cities such as Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary. From these locations, four airlines, Air Canada, Air Transat, Sunwing, and WestJet offer direct flights to Costa Rica.

Canada is the second-largest source of international visitors to Costa Rica, behind only the United States. In 2024, more than 257,000 Canadian tourists visited the country, according to ICT statistics.

On average, Canadian tourists stay 14 nights and spend approximately $105 daily. Their favorite activities include visiting beaches, hiking, and exploring volcanoes.

Tourism plays a vital role in Costa Rica’s economy. The country welcomed over 2.6 million tourists by air in 2024, marking a 7% increase compared to 2023.

Costa Rica’s participation in the Outdoor Adventure Show is part of its broader strategy to boost tourism revenue. Earlier this year, ICT also promoted the country at the Fitur International Tourism Fair in Madrid, Spain.

ICT is responsible for promoting tourism and supporting infrastructure development in tourism areas in Costa Rica.
