The Ministry of
Public Works and Transportation (MOPT)
has reinstated the vehicle license
plate restriction policy in San José
following the conclusion of Holy Week, the agency
announced.
As of Monday, the
Traffic Police are enforcing driving
restrictions on the Circunvalación
Route (Route 39), the ring road
surrounding the capital city.
There are no driving restrictions on weekends. All vehicles may circulate freely on Saturdays and Sundays.
Drivers found violating
the restriction face a fine of $55, according to
police officials. Authorities are also
encouraging drivers to travel
responsibly and to report any
instances of reckless driving by dialing
9-1-1, the national emergency line.
Recently, Costa Rica
recorded 174 traffic-related deaths. The figure marks a
significant increase in fatalities
compared to the deaths reported during
the same period in 2024.
Meanwhile, police
have issued warnings for common
infractions in beach areas, including
driving or parking on the sand and
irresponsible use of jet skis. Beachgoers are urged to
follow regulations to avoid fines or
accidents.
MOPT oversees the
roadways, as well as airport and port
infrastructure, and is responsible for
regulating public transportation across
the country.
