As large crowds head to beaches for upcoming national holidays, traffic authorities are warning drivers to comply with the law or risk fines, particularly between April 11 and April 20.

The holiday period begins Friday, April 11, with the observance of Juan Santamaría Day, a national holiday honoring the country’s historic figure. It continues with Holy Week from April 13 to April 20, when many Costa Ricans travel to coastal areas.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), the most common violations in beach areas include driving or parking on the sand and the irresponsible use of jet skis.

Costa Rican Traffic Law prohibits vehicles, including cars, SUVs, motorcycles, quad bikes, and trucks, from accessing beach areas. Violators face fines of $125.

Exceptions are granted only to vehicles with special authorization from the General Directorate of Traffic for activities such as launching boats, delivering fishing supplies, or responding to emergencies.

Improper use of personal watercraft (jet skis) is also punishable by a $125 fine. Regulations prohibit operating a jet ski within 50 meters of swimmers and within 30 meters of vessels, boats, or inflatable recreational items (e.g., water sleds).

Additional rules require that operators wear life jackets, users must be at least 16 years old and engine capacity must not exceed 400cc.

Authorities are urging the public to drive responsibly and to report any reckless driving by calling 9-1-1.

The Traffic Police will be conducting nationwide patrols as part of a broader surveillance operation to ensure road safety during the holidays.

Notably, traffic fines were reduced this year after the Court Superior Council approved adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index.

In a related announcement, officials confirmed there will be no vehicle restrictions in San José between April 11 and April 20 in recognition of the holiday period.

Recent police data shows that over 200 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence in recent months, following nearly 1,500 DUI tests.

The country has also seen a rise in traffic-related fatalities, with 102 deaths recorded between January and February 2025.

The MOPT oversees road, airport, and port infrastructure, in addition to public transportation policy across Costa Rica.
