The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) announced that there will be no vehicle restrictions in San José from April 11 to April 20, in celebration of the national holiday and Holy Week.

On Friday, April 11, Costa Rica will observe the national holiday honoring Juan Santamaría. Holy Week will follow from April 13 to April 20, when many residents travel to beaches, rural areas, and other tourist destinations across the country.

During this period, all vehicles, regardless of license plate number, will be allowed to travel freely throughout the city on weekdays.

The temporary suspension of driving restrictions comes as the government has also granted most public-sector employees in non-essential services paid vacation from April 11 to April 20. The reduction in traffic is expected as many public institutions and private companies prepare for their Easter break.

Currently, San José enforces a driving restriction on the Circunvalación Route (Route 39), which encircles the capital city. Under normal circumstances, the driving ban is in effect from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. based on the last digit of a vehicle's license plate:

  • Mondays: Vehicles with plates ending in 1 or 2.
  • Tuesdays: Plates ending in 3 or 4.
  • Wednesdays: Plates ending in 5 or 6.
  • Thursdays: Plates ending in 7 or 8.
  • Fridays: Plates ending in 9 or 0.

On Saturdays and Sundays,
there are no driving restrictions, and all vehicles are permitted to travel within the city.

The suspension of the driving ban comes as part of a broader effort to manage traffic during the holiday period.

Authorities are also reminding drivers to follow all traffic laws, as the police will be out in full force to enforce safety regulations as part of the national surveillance and safety operation.

In recent months, police arrested over 200 drivers for driving under the influence following nearly 1,500 DUI tests.

Traffic-related fatalities have also spiked early in 2025, with 102 recorded deaths between January and February.

Authorities are urging the public to drive responsibly and report any instances of reckless driving by calling the national emergency number, 9-1-1.

The driving restrictions will resume on Monday, April 21, 2025.

MOPT is responsible for overseeing the country’s road, airport, and port infrastructure, as well as public transportation regulations.
