The
Central Pacific Tourism and Commerce
Chamber (Catucoso) has rejected a
proposal to establish a red-light
district in Jacó Beach,
in Garabito Canton, Puntarenas
Province. Catucoso
stated such an initiative would
jeopardize public safety, social
harmony and the area's
reputation as one of Costa Rica's
leading tourist destinations. The
Chamber's
opposition came in response to a
proposal recently presented by
Garabito Canton Mayor Francisco
González during a Municipal Council
meeting. González
argued that attempting to combat
prostitution and other related
activities solely at the local level
would not solve the problem. Instead,
he proposed creating a designated area
similar to a red-light district where
those
activities could be regulated. According
to reports, Gonzalez's
proposal called for creating an
adults-only district where
prostitution and cannabis shops would
be permitted.
His
proposal also included allowing the sale
of recreational cannabis, which remains
illegal in Costa Rica, and
collecting taxes from cannabis shop
operators and people involved in
prostitution.
"We
are convinced that our canton should
continue to be recognized for its natural
beauty, surfing, entrepreneurship,
investment, culture, sports, and the
hospitality of its people," the Chamber
said.
