Costa Rica this week is hosting the 2026 pre-forum of the Ibero-American Council of Country Brands at the facilities of the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (Procomer), in San José.

According to authorities, the summit brought together country brand leaders from across Latin America to exchange experiences, best practices and perspectives on international positioning.

Alongside the “Essential Costa Rica” brand, the event included delegations from Ecuador, Mexico, Honduras, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and Uruguay, among others.

Throughout the sessions, representatives analyzed key topics to strengthen country brands, including reputation, sustainability and economic development.

“Costa Rica shared its development model, globally recognized for placing sustainability at the core of its value proposition,” Procomer said in a statement.

Among the country’s advantages highlighted at the summit:

  • 98.6% of Costa Rica’s electricity is generated from renewable sources.

  • The country has reversed deforestation trends and is the first tropical nation with more than 57% of its territory covered by forests.

  • More than 25% of its land is protected under conservation schemes.

Officials also emphasized continued economic growth. In 2025, total exports increased by 11%, while foreign direct investment flows surpassed $5 billion.

Under the “Essential Costa Rica” country brand, more than 780 public and private companies are licensed to promote their operations and strengthen competitiveness in international markets.

The agenda also included visits to major cultural landmarks, including the National Theatre of Costa Rica, the Plaza de la Cultura and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum.

“Hosting the CIMAP pre-forum further strengthens Costa Rica’s role as a key player in shaping a regional agenda that connects sustainability, reputation and competitiveness,” authorities said, adding that country brands are strategic tools to drive economic and social development across Latin America.

As part of efforts to boost tourism, Costa Rica also participated in the World Travel Market Latin America, held at Expo Center Norte in Brazil.

The tourism sector continues to expand. In 2025, the country recorded more than 2.6 million air arrivals.

Procomer, a state-owned agency, oversees export promotion programs, attracts foreign direct investment and provides technical and financial support for exporters.
