The
National Emergency Commission (CNE)
has expanded a Green Alert for
communities near the Rincón de la
Vieja Volcano,
located between the provinces of
Alajuela and Guanacaste, because of
ongoing eruptive activity, officials
said Wednesday. The
first-level alert is intended to keep
emergency response teams informed and
prepared for a possible increase in
volcanic activity. It allows
authorities and experts to closely
monitor changes in eruptions, gas
emissions, temperatures, seismic
activity, ash fall, acid rain and
hazardous gases. The
expanded alert covers the districts of
Dos Ríos and Aguas Claras in Upala
Canton, Alajuela Province, as well as
Mayorga, Cańas Dulces and Curubandé in
Liberia Canton, Guanacaste Province. According
to the Volcanological and
Seismological Observatory of Costa
Rica,
known
as
OVSICORI, the volcano has been
producing persistent columns of gas,
rocks and ash.
Scientists also continue to detect
sustained, low-frequency earthquakes. The
most recent eruptions occurred Monday,
Aug. 31, at 4:37 p.m. One eruption
produced a column of gases that rose
nearly 3,300 feet above the crater.
The
ejections were characterized by the
presence of
high-temperature magma. When
the
magma comes into contact with water, the
heat generated
in the volcano's soil or at the
surface causes the water to rapidly
evaporate, resulting in a powerful
explosion of steam, water and
ash. A
level 3 eruption alert was issued for
the volcano. It is the second-highest
level on the four-level activity
scale. Level 3 calls for caution and
indicates heightened volcanic unrest
and a greater potential for
explosions, ash dispersal or mudflows,
also known as lahars, without
indicating that a major eruption is
immediately underway. The
alert also allows scientists to
monitor potential increases in
eruptive activity, gas emissions,
temperatures, earthquakes, ash fall,
acid rain and hazardous gases. Despite
the volcanic activity, Rincón de la
Vieja National Park remains open to
visitors. Tickets
must be purchased online in advance
through the National System
of Conservation Areas website,
known
as
SINAC. Rincón
de la Vieja is an active stratovolcano
that forms part of the central
mountain range. It is the largest and
most active volcano in Costa Rica's
northwestern region.
The
volcano has a complex of nine craters, and
its summit rises more than 6,200 feet
above sea level and is known for its
geothermal activity, including hot
springs, fumaroles and mud pots. It's a
national park that covers approximately
84,000 acres and is a popular destination
for hiking and nature tourism.
