Vantage
Point Global inaugurated Costa Rica’s
first laboratory dedicated to
producing medical cannabis-derived
products, marking a new development in
the country’s emerging medical
cannabis industry. Medical
cannabis, also known as medical
marijuana, refers to cannabis products
containing cannabinoids that
physicians prescribe to patients. According
to the company, the new facility, the
first of its kind in Costa Rica, is
located in the Coris
Industrial Zone
in Cartago Province.

The
company currently employs 85 people.
With the new laboratory beginning
operations, Vantage Point Global plans
to create at least 400 additional
jobs. To
boost exports, Costa Rica legalized
the production of medical cannabis and
hemp in 2022. However, recreational
use, personal cultivation and personal
consumption remain illegal. In February 2025, the
Ministry of Public Health issued a
decree establishing technical
regulations for medicinal products
based on cannabis.
The regulations permit the production,
manufacturing and sale of medicines
containing cannabis as an ingredient. The
Ministry of Public Health is the
state-owned agency responsible for
overseeing and regulating public and
private health care in Costa Rica.
