Transport
of merchandise returns
to normal after agreement with
Nicaragua
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
After the agreement between the authorities of Costa
Rica and Nicaragua, the transportation of goods by
land in Central America returns to normal, announced
the Ministry of Security.
"The opening of the northern border has been achieved,
we already have the first truck crossing and we are
going to continue working," said Michael Soto,
Minister of Security.
According to the ministry, the opening of the border
with Nicaragua, only for the transport of trucks,
began on Sunday night and ran for 6 hours. Beginning
Monday, the open transport of goods from Nicaragua to
Costa Rica reopened at 6 a.m.
Since May 18, truck drivers have been unable to
continue their journey due to border closings. During
that time truck drivers had blocked the passage as a
measure of protest against the sanitary measures
imposed by the Ministry of Health, demanding to allow
the entry of foreign carriers who were not infected
with covid-19.
Last week the Ministry of Health reported having
rejected the entry of 46 foreign truck drivers for
being infected with covid-19.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, the most recent
agreement between the Central American authorities and
the Central American Transport Federation includes
that truck drivers can remain in customs warehouses in
each country for up to five days while continuing to
its final destination.
The Council of Ministers for Economic Integration of
Central America agreed to restart operations on the
border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica and put into
operation the plan approved jointly with the Central
American Federation of Carriers for the transit of
goods, as announced by Vinicio Cerezo, the Secretary
General of the Central American Integration System.
All truck drivers entering the country should undergo
the diagnostic test for covid-19, authorities said.

How can the authorities detect if truck drivers get
the covid-19 while they are traveling in the
country? We would like to know
