U.S. government develops Smart
Cities Costa Rica virtual conference By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The U.S. government organizes the virtual conference ‘Smart Cities and Digital Transformation’ to gather with its Central American counterparts and "jointly develop a roadmap to the future, in preparation for new global industry trends and technologies, the economic impact on emerging markets, current infrastructure, and national security." The U.S. Ambassador Sharon Day highlighted the importance of Central American countries for the United States and for the strengthening of commercial and diplomatic bonds. “Experts will give a vision of our future, but our main message is that U.S. firms and other international partners have what it takes to help Central American countries meet their strategic objectives,” said Day. Costa Rican speakers include the first lady Claudia Dobles; Minister of Science Luis Adrian Salazar; and Electricity Institute president Irene Cañas. This virtual conference is part of the "America Crece", or in Spanish “Growth in the Americas,” initiative established to generate jobs in the Americas and to reactivate economic growth by facilitating urgent infrastructure projects to strengthen existing commercial ties. The goal of the initiative is to create a transparent and competitive environment, in accordance with the best international practices, said the U.S. Embassy in its statement. According to the U.S. Embassy, when the initiative was created in 2018, the main focus of the conference was energy infrastructure, but now it includes infrastructure in telecommunications, energy, ports, roads and airports. Also, the U.S. Department of State, Treasury, Trade, and Energy; U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) participates in the initiative. ---------------- What other important attributes should the country develop for competitive practices?
