Academy of Women Entrepreneurs
graduated almost 30 Costa Ricans

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

27 Costa Rican women entrepreneurs graduated on Friday from the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs, AWE, making them the first cohort to celebrate via virtual graduation. The program allows them to learn new skills and create business plans.

At graduation, the United States Ambassador Sharon Day expressed her admiration for the group of women who, despite the challenges of the pandemic, participated in four months of training.

"Empowering women who have businesses is not just a nice idea, it is a necessity," said Ambassador Day. "When women are economically empowered, they reinvest in their families and communities. They produce a multiplier effect that stimulates economic growth and contributes to global stability."

Entrepreneurs participating in AWE have businesses of various kinds, including aloe extract drinks, products for animals with disabilities, graphic design, maintenance for public transport, natural cosmetic products, shoes, tattoos, bras for women who have had a mastectomy, dental services among many more.

The virtual classes were organized by the La Libertad Park Foundation. According to the foundation, this program forced participants not only to face innovation in their business but also to innovate virtual lessons due to the pandemic.

The AWE program began in Costa Rica in 2019, as a pilot plan led by the Office of Cultural and Educational Affairs of the United States Department of State, with the support of La Libertad Park Foundation.

The foundation develops its support programs for female entrepreneurs in La Libertad Park, which is located in Desamparados. La Libertad Park program was created in 2008 by the Ministry of Culture.

The first generation of AWE Costa Rica was made up of 26 women, who completed a four-month training program on entrepreneurship for women, administration, workshops, company tours, personalized mentoring and the opportunity to compete for non-reimbursable funds to invest and strengthen their projects.

"Today, this group of female entrepreneurs continues to grow, as do their businesses," said the  Embassy in its statement.

AWE is designed to empower around 50 million women worldwide by 2025, with the goal of reaching their economic potential and creating the conditions for greater stability, security and prosperity for all.
