- Published: Monday, February 3, 2020- No incidents in the municipal
elections
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Supreme Tribunal of Elections says it expects to count votes from up to 67% of the population, equivalent to 3,398,338 citizens, who were registered for the municipal elections. However, at the close of the edition, the Tribunal reported 74.64% abstention. The vote Sunday was to fill 6,138 people in positions of mayor, vice-major and other public jobs of each local government. According to the tribunal, there was no incident or conflict in any of the 5,755 polling stations throughout the country. But the total vote is not expected to be know until at least later today. The results started to be reported at 8:30 p.m. from the tribunal site www.tse.go.cr. It is expected that at noon today all voting totals will be reported. Sunday, after the polls closed at 6 p.m. and officials began with the process of provisional counting of votes. Once the result of that evaluation was obtained, about 2,500 officers authorized by the tribunal sent the provisional results through an online platform and a call center. Also, the tribunal developed a platform to allow voters to access the results from their smart devices. According to the tribunal, the results published since last night are the result of an initial count. Today, Monday, will begin the process of receiving physical votes receipts, which were transported from each voting center. Then, Tribunal officials will work on the final vote-by-vote count. For a year, the tribunal has been working in coordination with the Costa Rican Electricity Institute to have strict controls that guarantee success in the transmission of the results. Another of the innovations this year is the use of the Waze platform that gave drivers a warning of the fastest routes to vote without delay. Also, the application gave indications of the alternate routes to the voting center in case of any traffic inconvenience on the route. "Waze incorporated into its databases the location of the 2,088 voting centers, between schools, colleges and other places that served that purpose, which the institution will enable throughout the country," said the tribunal in its statement. According to the tribunal, in the Sunday elections, 53 experts participated as international observers of the Costa Rican municipality votes. They were grouped into two categories: - The international observers official mission, who were 29 officials representing the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations. - Visiting international observers, who are 24 members of international entities, governments and parliaments. Twelve of these international observers are representatives of the Organization of American States plus 12 other observers representing the U. S. Embassy in Costa Rica. "The observers of both categories came from Central America, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, Jamaica, Perú, Argentina, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, México and the United States," said the tribunal in its statement. Today, observers will deliver a final report on the election process. The Costa Rican Red Cross gave coverage to the elections with more than 450 paramedics and 150 emergency vehicles. Similarly, police from the Ministry of Security were located in the voting centers to deal with any possible incident. According to both institutions, there was no conflict or incident during the elections. -------------------- What may be the first work you will ask to the new major in your community?
