Four homeless
shelters
open in San José
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Four shelters open for people experiencing
homelessness during the crisis caused by covid-19,
announced the Municipality of San José.
This program is being financed with funds from the
municipality and the National Emergency Commission, in
addition to the support of the Ministry of Health and
other public institutions.
"Not all people with this condition can be covered, at
least not with those most vulnerable and who have risk
factors,"said Johnny Araya, Mayor of San José.
The first shelter was set up at the Municipality Sleep
Center in downtown San José, where 51 elderlies with
some type of disability are cared for.
Another shelter was opened at the Ciudad Deportiva
Heiner Ugalde facilities in the Hatillo district. The
facilities were equipped with beds, mattresses,
pillows, sheets, covers, blankets and clothes enough
for housing 100 people. This shelter is under the
administration of the "Lloverá Comida" foundation
hired by the National Emergency Commission to provide
food, cleaning, security, personal hygiene services to
those experiencing homelessness.
Another shelter opened at the Hostal El Paseo which is
a BnB located in downtown San José with the capacity
to house 35 people.
The fourth shelter opened in the facilities of the
Municipal Recreational Complex in the Canton of Pavas.
In this place, the ¨Chepe Se Baña¨ foundation is
housing 30 homeless elders.
People who choose to live in one of these shelters
will receive food, personal care services, security,
laundry, recreational activities and medical services
during the next three months.
Also, specialists from the Institute on Alcoholism and
Drug Dependence will give support to people who are
suffering from addictive diseases to alcohol or drugs.
These shelters do not cover a large number of homeless
people in the capital. According to the Institute of
Social Aid, in the country, there are 5,779 homeless
people, of these 3,756 people are in San José.
The cost for running the shelters is financed between
the National Emergency Fund, the Social Protection
Board and the Municipality of San José.
