Costa Rica 's stand recognized as the best in Spain

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Tourism Institute announced that its display during the international tourism fair FITUR in Madrid, Spain last week has been named the best stand in the countries category.

According to the institute, more than 165 booths from other countries were evaluated at the fair.

The recognition for the best stand for Costa Rica was delivered by the official jury of the organization on Friday, the institute said.

According to Sofía Alonso, a member of the jury of FITUR, the prize also evaluates the country brand, functionality and commitment to sustainability. "It is taken into consideration that it invites people to enter and provides complete information about the country."

“We have built it to reflect the colors and flavors of our land, including the sounds and smells of the rainforest,” said María Amalia Revelo, minister of Tourism.

According to the institute, an area that recreates a so-called pulpería was included in the stand. A pulpería is a small neighborhood grocery store.

The pulpería was decorated with items such as coffee jars, coffee baskets, coffee bags, among others. It is there where coffee, cotton candy rates were given to visitors, said the institute.

The stand was also decorated with tropical plants such as heliconias, bromeliads, palm leaves, among others, from the Province of Limón.

In addition to Costa Rica, Senegal and South Korea received the same recognition, as representatives of their continents.

According to the institute, Costa Rican symbols, such as a sloth, in extra-large format, were exhibited in places like La Gran Vía in Madrid.

"It has been a warm invitation to Spaniards for their next vacations to enjoy unique experiences, from a diverse tourist offering, full of biodiversity, nature, outdoor activities, well-being, rural tourism, sun and beach," said the institute in its statement.

According to the institute, La Gran Vía is one of the main avenues of the Spanish capital with more than 50,000 vehicles going through daily.

The images about Costa Rica, as tourist attractions such as waterfalls, frogs, folk dances, the tropical forest, monkeys, a smiling sloth, among many others, were displayed on more than 20 screens located in the Capitol Cinema, Lope de Vega Theater, Callao City Light, and Coliseum Theater, among others.

"Our goal is to build a link and an emotional connection with the Spanish public, one of the main generators of European tourists to our country," said Ireth Rodríguez, head of promotion of the institute.

According to the institute, using data collected by the public relations and marketing agency Blueroom, this campaign intends to generate more than 36 million impressions, calculated from the weekly movement of people in Gran Vía and Callao. Moreover, Costa Rican audiovisuals were to be screened 123,000 times during the fair week.

According to the most recent data of the institute, during 2019, more than 62,000 Spaniards visited Costa Rica by air, placing Spain as the fourth largest market for tourists from Europe.

The Spanish tourists who visit the country did so as a couple at 47% of the time, and there has been a remarkable growth of those who visit as a family at 34%, said the institute in its statement. "Their average stay is 13 nights and they spend an average of $198 a day."

This is the second campaign abroad that the institute develops this month.

In the second week of January, the institute participated in the tourism fair "vakantierbeurs" or holiday vacation fair in English, which took place in the city of Utrecht, Holland, from Thursday until Sunday.

According to the institute, this fair was considered the tourism promotion event with the largest participation in The Netherlands. This year was the 50th that the fair was held with more than 103,000 visitors.

The presence of Costa Rica included a 100-square meter stand displayed audiovisual elements from the country's rainforest, the institute said in its statement.

"Also as an innovation, an area was created for photography dedicated to the #stopanimalselfies campaign, which promotes avoiding selfies of direct contact with the wild animals of the Costa Rican fauna, and rather, invites attendees to take a selfie as a souvenir of a toy sloth," said the institute.

Inside the stand, coffee, donuts and sweets made in Costa Rica were offered to visitors. Also, an area was created with real surfboards to provide tips and recommendations to the visitors on how to surfing.

According to the statistics of the institute, The Netherlands represents the fifth largest target market of tourists from the European region. More than 33,000 Dutch entered Costa Rica by all routes during 2019, with an average stay of 17.8 nights and an average expense of $115.94 per day.

In the Costa Rica station area, companies from the tourism sector participated. They included Andaz Costa Rica Resort, Go Tours, Ecole Viajes, ANC Costa Rica Group, Tango Mar, Condor Verde Travel and Destination Costa Rica.

According to data from the marketing area of the institute, Costa Rica participated in 2019 in 24 international tourism fairs, mainly in the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America. Through the fairs, the institute estimates they reached 700,000 people during 2019, the institute said.

More travel shows where the institute participates are the New York Times Travel Show in the United States, at FESPO in Switzerland and ITB Fair in Germany.
