Alert issued due to strong gusts and high waves By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The National Emergency Commission declared a green alert Monday in the Caribbean and northern zone of the country due to the increase in strong winds and highs seas. A green alert is given when it is anticipated that a meteorological phenomenon endanger a specific area in the country. The authorities act to keep the public informed so that they will report to 911 any indication of danger related to the alert. According to the authorities, a high-pressure system over the Atlantic Ocean has been affecting the weather in the Central American region. This causes pressure on the Caribbean Sea, generating accelerated winds as well as rain on the Atlantic coast. According to the most recent report of the meteorological Institute, gusts of up to 60 km/h have been recorded in the Central Valley and winds of up to 70 km/h have been clocked in the lower parts of Guanacaste Province. However, in the mountainous parts of northern Guanacaste, winds have been recorded up to 100 km/h. Rains will continue over the Caribbean and northern zone. The phenomenon of strong winds is expected to continue until Wednesday in the central zone of the country and until Sunday in the northern zone of Guanacaste. Due to this new windy front, the National Emergency Commission called for increased precautionary measures to people living or traveling to the areas of the Caribbean coast and the northern part of the Pacific Coast in Guanacaste. Due to the current conditions, people should be alert, especially in areas of high risk due to floods, landslides, or strong wind gusts, said the specialist. Specialists recommend: - Be alert in vulnerable areas to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased river flow and landslides. - In case of a thunderstorm, take refuge in a safe place. - In case of strong wind gusts be alert to possible falling tree branches or electrical cables. Authorities asked the public to call 911 to report any possible flooding, falling trees or landslides. A call was also made for people to avoid any type of controlled burn because high winds could cause a small fire to become ablaze quickly. A.M. Costa Rica urges readers to share this alert with their contacts, as well as recommend tourists to increase precautionary measures if they are going to sail or take a local flight. ------------------------ Have strong winds caused an emergency in your community?
