Coral Restoration Consortium in Costa Rica

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Coral Restoration Consortium 2020, a meeting of world leaders and experts in coral reef restoration, will take place in March in Guanacaste Province.

According to the National System of Conservation Areas, known as SINAC, the congress is sponsored and promoted primarily by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Agency and will be organized by the Coral Restoration Consortium.

NOAA, as it is known, is a scientific agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, major waterways, and the atmosphere.

The Coral Restoration Consortium says it is a community of scientists, managers, coral restoration practitioners and educators dedicated to enabling coral reef ecosystems to survive.

"As we face a greater impact of climate change, the scientific concern in this regard also increases, identifying key challenges to be effective in the research and actions that must be taken worldwide," said SINAC in its statement.

According to the specialists, the goal of this congress is to unite the world's scientific leaders, representatives of the U.S., Australia, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Colombia, among other countries, to participate and identify research priorities related to corals during the present decade.

Also, it has been proposed to organize the next Reef Futures in 2021, where around 1,000 participants are expected to investigate coral reefs.

In this meeting, the participants will present their work. Networks are created that facilitate the impact on a larger scale, said an announcement.

The Raising Coral Costa Rica is co-organizing this meeting with the support of the German Development Cooperation, GIZ, the Ministry of Environment and other organizations.

During this congress in Costa Rica, leaders will work to ensure correct practices and efficient interventions to protect the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, the coral reefs, said the specialists.
