By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Costa Rica has received 4,163,085 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission. The most recent shipment containing 319,410 doses of Pfizer vaccines arrived on a DHL cargo last night at the Juan Santamaría International Airport. These are part of the 6,000,425 Pfizer vaccines purchased to inoculate more than 3 million people. Yesterday, the country imported 163,200 doses of AstraZeneca as part of the purchased 1,092,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses for the treatment of more than 500,000 people. An additional 172,950 doses have been imported as part of the purchased 2,038,300 vaccines through the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access, COVAX system, of the World Health Organization. The purchase includes WHO-approved vaccines, such as AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna. This purchase was made to provide treatment to more than one million people. The total vaccines purchased are about 9,130,725 doses to ensure treatment for more than 4.5 million people. And now, the country counts with 503,100 doses donated by the U.S. government to reach a total of 9,633,825 to protect more than 4.8 million people living in Costa Rica. As of Tuesday, there have been 3,193,895 vaccines against covid-19 applied in the country, reaching a national vaccination rate of 61.9 per 100 inhabitants, according to the Vaccine National Information System report. By the end of this year, the government's goal is to have vaccinated at least 4 million people in order to keep the rate of infection down and achieve herd immunity. This week, President Carlos Alvarado announced a plan to vaccinate everyone living in Costa Rica, including undocumented people. There are 72,944 active covid-19 cases in the country. Of the total 405,206 cases detected since last year, there were 5,013 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately 1.2% death rate in Costa Rica, reported the Health Ministry on Thursday. ------------------------ How close is your country to reach herd immunity?
