Costa Rica staff As of today, there have been 3,193,895 vaccines against covid-19 applied in the country, reaching a national vaccination rate of 61.9 per 100 inhabitants, according to the Vaccine National Information System report. Of these, only 2,352,430 people have received their first dose, approximately 45% of the country's population. And 841,465 people have completed their two-dose treatment, approximately 16 % of the population. At least 83% of the population, about 4,274,344 million people in Costa Rica, must be fully vaccinated in order to keep infections down and achieve herd immunity, according to Social Security. According to the authorities, from July 16 to 25, 503,100 doses donated by the United States government were applied. Currently, the vaccination campaign is focused on people over the age of 12 with pre-existing health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity, cancer, among others. As well as people of the so-called Group 5 which consists of those between the ages of 30 to 58 with no health issues. The rush to get more people vaccinated comes at a time when health authorities confirmed the first detected cases of the Delta coronavirus variant in the country. The first case was detected on June 13. Currently, there are 16 patients infected with Delta-variant. Of these, 12 are Costa Rican and 4 foreigners. Three of the cases are people who traveled to Germany, the United States and Nicaragua. According to the authorities, the vaccine is only available to nationals and people in the country who are residents. They must show resident ID (DIMEX) or have any document that indicates progress in the residency process and their passport. The vaccines will be applied at the local public clinic, known as Ebais. Public hospitals will also be carrying out the vaccines, as well as some malls, supermarkets and clinics. It is advised for people to first visit their local Ebais to get information on the vaccination program for that specific area or by calling the Social Security Covid line 905-225-2000.  As of Thursday, Costa Rica has received 3,677, 375 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission. There are 70,748 active covid-19 cases in the country. Of the total 394,135 cases detected since last year, there were 4,915 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately 1.3% death rate in Costa Rica, according to the Health Ministry report on Monday.
