By the A.M. Costa Rica staff President Carlos Alvarado announced that he will soon present a plan to vaccinate all foreigners living in Costa Rica regardless of immigration status. Meaning that any person born outside of the country who now lives in Costa Rica without any immigration status such as legal workers, residents, tourists or refugees may qualify to get their vaccine against covid-19. The announcement was made by the president on Tuesday during a press conference held at the San José main Firefighters Station. According to Alvarado, it is a human right for undocumented people to get vaccinated. It’s one step closer to having the entire population of the country fully vaccinated and in the right direction for economic recovery. "The more inhabitants who are vaccinated, the more the population will be protected and that will be the easiest route for economic recovery," he said. His biggest barriers for his plan are acquiring more vaccine doses and developing a vaccine registration system for undocumented folks. One possibility is that the vaccines come from a donation from a friend country. "There is already a solution on the way, which is being worked by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, to have vaccines available for the undocumented population," Alvarado added. The government is expected to publish its vaccination plan for undocumented people living in the country sometime this week. Currently, the covid vaccination campaign only includes Costa Rican citizens, foreigners with residency or refugee status (known as DIMEX) and foreigners who can demonstrate that they are carrying out the residency application process. As of Tuesday, there have been 3,193,895 vaccines against covid-19 applied in the country, reaching a national vaccination rate of 61.9 per 100 inhabitants, according to the Vaccine National Information System report. ![]() As of Thursday, Costa Rica has received 3,677, 375 vaccines against covid-19, according to the National Emergency Commission. There are 71,918 active covid-19 cases in the country. Of the total 402,044 cases detected since last year, there were 4,987 deaths listed as covid-19 related, approximately 1.3% death rate in Costa Rica, reported the Health Ministry on Tuesday. ------------------------ How should authorities import more vaccines against covid-19 to inoculate the citizens and residents quickly?
