Joint Task Force-Bravo (JTF-B), based at Soto Cano Air Base in Honduras, conducts a medical readiness training exercise (MEDRETE) this week in Cartago Province.

A surgical team from JTF-B medical mission is taking place in the remote districts of Pejibaye,  Tucurrique and the Suiza in Turrialba Canton, all located within Cartago.

During each MEDRETE, JTF-Bravo offers various services, including preventative care, immunizations, laboratory workups, optometry, pharmacy, and general medical treatment.

Over 200 individuals
are expected to receive care daily, according to Dr. Giselle Aguilar Mendoza, a JTF-Bravo physician.

"We’re talking about a mission involving 17 JTF-Bravo personnel, thousands of pounds of medical equipment, and long journeys through difficult terrain," Aguilar said.

In addition to the U.S. team, approximately 45 doctors from Social Security are participating in the mission.

Dr. Wilmer Amador, a liaison officer with the JTF-Bravo Medical Detachment, has played a key role in planning these missions since their inception in 1993. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience navigating the complexities of international collaboration.

"Each MEDRETE presents unique challenges," Dr. Amador said. "We must address not only logistical and material constraints but also cultural and social factors. In Costa Rica, for example, the absence of a military force can influence how our personnel are perceived. We must remain mindful of these factors to ensure the mission’s success."

The MEDRETE initiative reflects JTF-Bravo's ongoing commitment to Central America. According to the U.S. Army, the mission not only provides vital medical care but also fosters cooperation and mutual respect between nations.

"By delivering critical medical services and training, JTF-Bravo is saving lives and strengthening the bonds of partnership across the hemisphere," the Army said in a statement.

JTF-Bravo is the forward-deployed component of the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) in Central America. The organization's goal is to promote regional stability and counter transnational threats.
