The Arizona, U.S.-headquartered chain of pet superstores, PetSmart, inaugurated its new technology center in the Ultrapark 1 Free Trade Zone, in Heredia Province.

According to the firm, the new facility will serve to support global operations in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, for the more than 1,670 PetSmart stores, seven distribution centers, company headquarters, and distributed e-commerce sites.

“The PetSmart Costa Rica team is a critical extension of our larger technology organization,” said Greg Fancher, Chief Information Technology Officer at PetSmart. “They will help to advance our ongoing investments in our technology infrastructure that will propel our digital transformation and allow us to better serve our associates and the pet parents and pets we care for.”

The company is actively hiring professionals in the following roles: data and quality control engineers, mobile application developers, and SalesForce engineers.  Those interested in applying may do so by sending visiting the firm jobs website.

Even though new international companies are creating jobs in Costa Rica, unemployment remains at 8.5%, according to the National Employment Survey. Data recorded from April to June 2024 shows more than 201,000 people without registered jobs. Of these, 111,000 are men, making up 55% of the unemployed people in the country.

PetSmart Inc. announced the opening of operations in Costa Rica in early 2023. It sells pet products, services, and small pets. Its stores sell pet food, pet supplies, pet accessories, and small pets. Stores also provide services including grooming, dog daycare, dog and cat boarding, veterinary care via in-store third-party clinics, and dog training. It is the leading North American pet company.

PetSmart is one of many international brands expanding operations in Costa Rica. Recently, Dunkin', a U.S. and internationally recognized coffee and donuts shop company, announced the opening of new locations in the country.
