Costa Rica made a major mark at the 2025 Adaptive CrossFit World Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., as two national athletes, Andrea Agüero Valle and Amalia Ortuño Lizano, claimed world titles in their respective divisions.

Agüero was named “The Fittest on Earth” in the Visual division, becoming the first Costa Rican to ever earn the honor. Meanwhile, Ortuño reinforced her dominance in the Seated 2 category for wheelchair athletes, winning her sixth consecutive world championship.

“This is a dream come true, it’s reaching the highest level possible in the sport I love and have sacrificed so much for,” said an emotional Agüero after receiving her medal.

Living with visual impairments caused by Stargardt disease and retinitis pigmentosa, she competed blindfolded and relied on her handler, and husband, Cristopher Soto, for guidance throughout the events.

Ortuño, a multi-time champion, expressed similar pride. “I feel just as happy as when I won my first title. Holding a medal in my hands is amazing, but leaving behind a legacy that will endure over time is simply indescribable,” she said.

She began her Adaptive CrossFit journey seven years ago after facing a challenging medical diagnosis.

The championship featured more than 260 athletes competing across 16 adaptive divisions.

Costa Rica’s double victory not only celebrates two world champions but also highlights the skill, determination, and resilience of its athletes on the international stage. The country’s growing presence in global sports was further reinforced recently when Sherman Güity-Güity won two gold medals at the Cali Para Athletics Grand Prix in Cali, Colombia.
