One man was killed and five others injured Wednesday in a multi-vehicle collision on Route 32, the main highway connecting San José and Limón.

The victim, a Costa Rican identified by the last name Redondo-Jiménez (50), was among six people transported to
Calderón Guardia Public Hospital in San José following the crash.

He arrived at the hospital alive but died several hours later while receiving treatment in the emergency room.

According to a report from the Red Cross, the accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. near the intersection of National Secondary Route 117 and Route 32.  Multiple witnesses called emergency services to report the incident, which involved one truck, six cars and one motorcycle.

The Red Cross, supported by three Fire Department units, responded quickly to the scene. Paramedics stabilized the injured and transferred them to the hospital. Three victims, including Redondo-Jiménez, were reported in critical condition.

The crash began when a tractor-trailer traveling from Limón to San José suffered brake failure and plowed into at least six cars and a motorcycle, said the Fire Department.

Firefighters worked to free five individuals trapped inside their vehicles. Redondo-Jiménez, the motorcyclist, was found with his legs pinned beneath the truck’s container.

"The motorcyclist’s legs were trapped under the truck’s container and he couldn’t move them. Emergency responders had to free him from underneath the truck," the Fire Department added.

The large-scale emergency response included six Red Cross rescue units, three fire trucks units, 20 Red Cross responders, 15 firefighters, and 10 traffic officers, along with additional police officers.

Police and transit officials remained at the scene for several hours to collect evidence and investigate the cause of the truck’s brake failure that triggered the deadly collision.

Recently, Costa Rica recorded 174 traffic-related deaths. The figure marks a significant increase in fatalities compared to the deaths reported during the same period in 2024.

In 2024, Costa Rica recorded more than 500 traffic-related deaths, with motorcyclists making up 53% of the victims.
