The
National Animal Health Service
(Senasa) has issued an active recall
for several meat brands sold in Costa
Rica due to potential contamination
with Escherichia coli
(E. coli),
a bacteria that
can pose serious health risks. E. coli
is commonly found in the intestines of
humans and animals, with most strains
being harmless and aiding digestion.
However, certain strains can cause
illness, leading to symptoms such as
diarrhea, stomach cramps, and, in
severe cases, bloody diarrhea and a
potentially life-threatening condition
called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
(HUS). Contamination typically occurs
through the consumption of tainted
food or water. The
recall affects the following brands
and products:
All
supermarkets and grocery stores have
been instructed to remove these
products from their shelves. Customers
are advised to dispose of the affected
meat or return it for a refund. Individuals
who experience symptoms after
consuming any
of the
recalled products should seek
immediate medical attention at a local
clinic or healthcare provider. For
further information,
consumers can contact Senasa at (506)
2587-1600. Senasa,
a state-run agency, is responsible for
developing and enforcing regulations
related to animal health across Costa
Rica. The
organization oversees programs and
campaigns aimed
at preventing, controlling, and
eradicating
pests and animal diseases while
ensuring the health of domestic and
wild animals. A.M. Costa Rica encourages readers
to share this alert with their
community. This recall follows
a recent alert from the Ministry of
Health regarding the R y H Lácteos cheese brand,
which was pulled from stores due to
potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
