Agents from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), acting on intelligence provided by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), have arrested a U.S. citizen identified by the last name Duran. He was the subject of a Red Notice, an international request to locate and detain a wanted person for extradition.

According to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), Duran was apprehended in a public area near the Puntarenas province bus terminal located in San José.

Authorities said the Red Notice was issued by the U.S. Department of Justice, specifically from the state of Pennsylvania. Duran faces charges including trafficking cocaine and fentanyl, as well as criminal association.

Following standard security procedures, Duran was taken into custody and transferred to the Migration Apprehension Center in San José. He will remain there while extradition proceedings are underway.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, officials have withheld additional details. Only immediate family members may request further information.

The OIJ is urging the public to report individuals who may be subject to an international Red Notice. Confidential tips can be submitted by calling the hotline at 800-8000-645 or the quick line at 11-76. Bilingual agents are available to assist in both English and Spanish.

Duran’s case is the latest in a series of arrests involving foreign nationals with international warrants captured in Costa Rica. Recently, Interpol detained a French citizen, identified by the surname Ferchichi, who was also the subject of a Red Notice for multiple felony charges.

The OIJ is a division of Costa Rica’s Supreme Court of Justice and conducts criminal investigations and holds nationwide police authority.
