The Traffic Police ruled that there would be no restrictions on plate numbers, including cars, motorcycles, trucks, or any other sort of vehicle when moving across San José City for the two-week holiday break.

The benefit will extend from Monday, December 23, 2024, to Friday, January 3, 2025. During these days, drivers with any license plate number may drive anywhere in the city on any weekday.

The driving ban will be temporarily suspended due to traffic reductions as most public institutions and private companies prepare for their end-of-year holiday, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

Currently, the driving prohibition applies from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the Circunvalación Route, or Route 39, which comprises all of the streets that ring the capital city.

The current driving control rule is based on the last number of the vehicle's license plate.

• Mondays the rule applies on plates ending in 1 or 2.

• Tuesdays the ban on driving affects plates ending in 3 or 4.

• Wednesdays vehicles with plates ending in 5 or 6 are banned.

• Thursdays the rule applies to vehicle plates ending in 7 or 8.

• Fridays the law applies to vehicle plates ending in 9 or 0.

On Sundays and Saturdays, the driving restrictions do not apply. All types of vehicles, regardless of their plate numbers, are allowed to travel in the city.

Police warn travelers to respect the rules as they’ll be out in full force. They launched the "Costa Rica's Safe Holidays operation" to provide more surveillance and security during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The Traffic Police will resume the ban on driving regulation on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025.

Authorities recorded 394 road deaths as of October 2024. Of the total of fatalities, 52% were motorcyclists.

In 2023, there were over 500 deaths in road accidents.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) is a government agency responsible for planning and building roads, airports, and maritime ports and regulating public transportation.
