Costa
Rica has claimed the top spot in the
2024 Adventure Tourism Development Index
(ATDI)
for "Emerging Economies," highlighting its
increasing prominence in the global adventure
tourism sector, the Costa Rican Tourism
Institute (ICT) announced.
ATDI is
developed by
the Adventure Travel Trade Association
(ATTA) and the U.S. George Washington
University International Institute of
Tourism Studies (GW).
According
to the index, Costa Rica is,
"driven by its strong commitment to
sustainable development and its pristine
natural beauty."
This
year’s report is the first update since the
pre-pandemic version in early 2020. "The
ATDI is an invaluable resource for those
shaping the future of adventure tourism,
particularly Destination Marketing
Organizations (DMOs) and trade
associations," said ATTA in its statement.
The index evaluates 186 countries across nine key pillars: sustainable development, safety, health, climate resilience, natural resources, cultural resources, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, and image. "This year's index features a revamped methodology, reflecting the evolving priorities of the adventure travel sector," the firm added.
The
index offers insights into emerging trends
and destinations, empowering key players in
the tourism sector to anticipate market
shifts and ensure long-term competitiveness.
Furthermore, the ATDI underscores the vital
connection between natural and cultural
resources, adventure tourism, and
sustainable development, encouraging
responsible growth within the industry.
The
2024 ATDI provides a fresh perspective on
the adventure tourism landscape. "It not
only highlights the destinations that are
excelling but also offers valuable guidance
for countries aiming to improve their
offerings and attract a growing segment of
travelers seeking meaningful experiences,"
the association noted.
In
second place, under the same category, is Chile
"demonstrating robust performance in safety
and climate resilience," the index reads.
Thailand in third
place is
considered as "excelling in image and
infrastructure."
Among
the European countries, Germany secures a
place in the top five for cultural resources
and climate resilience, reflecting its
commitment to both preserving heritage and
addressing environmental challenges.
The Tourism Institute (ICT), is the government agency responsible for promoting tourism in Costa Rica.
