A fleet of 150 electric taxis featuring banners of Costa Rican flora and fauna is navigating the streets of Paris as part of a campaign by the Tourism Institute (ICT).

The taxis, which circulate near popular tourist attractions such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Palais Garnier Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower, aim to capture the attention of French citizens.

The printed ads showcase images of Costa Rican nature and culture, including monkeys, birds, beaches, mountains, and dancers in traditional folk costumes.

The taxis will operate throughout the European winter months, promoting Costa Rica as a “Pura Vida” destination with warm weather and rich biodiversity.

"The use of electric taxis aligns with Costa Rica’s commitment to environmental sustainability," said Ireth Rodríguez, ICT’s head of marketing.

Officials estimate the campaign’s banners will be seen by 140 million people, potentially attracting new tourists to the country.

Tourism remains a cornerstone of Costa Rica’s economy. By November 2024, more than 380,000 European tourists had visited Costa Rica, with approximately 63,000 travelers coming from France.

Through July 2024, over 1.7 million tourists arrived by air, marking a 13.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The country set a tourism record in 2023, welcoming more than 2.4 million visitors.

The Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), or Tourism Institute, is the government agency responsible for promoting tourism in Costa Rica.
