The Costa Rica Traffic Police conducted nearly 9,500 DUI tests in 2024, identifying more than 1,700 drivers under the influence, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

These drivers were found with blood alcohol levels exceeding 0.75 grams, classifying their offense as an "A-Level" violation. This resulted in their arrest and the impounding of their vehicles. Offenders face a fine of approximately $730 and receive six penalty points on their driving record.

Accumulating six points leads to an automatic suspension of the driver’s license. To regain their driving privileges, offenders must retake the driving course and score at least 70 out of 100 on the renewal exam.

Additionally, over 300 drivers were fined for blood alcohol levels between 0.20 and 0.75 grams. While they were not arrested, they incurred the same $730 fine and six penalty points on their record.

More than 250 drivers tested at very low blood alcohol levels, avoiding any penalties.

Police also reported over 100 cases where drivers refused to take a DUI test. These individuals were taken to the police station for testing.

The public is encouraged to report suspected drunk drivers by calling the 9-1-1 emergency line.

The traffic fines were reduced this year after the Court Superior Council approved adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index.

In 2024, Costa Rica recorded over 500 traffic-related deaths, with motorcyclists accounting for 53% of the fatalities.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) oversees the planning and construction of roads, airports, and maritime ports, as well as regulating public transportation.
