Traffic deaths in Costa Rica have surged this year, with 389 fatalities reported through August 2025, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

That figure represents a sharp increase from the 298 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024,  a rise of 91 fatalities.

Motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable road users, accounting for 209 deaths, or 53% of the total. Drivers represented 65 fatalities (16%), cyclists 26 (6%), and pedestrians 43 (11%). The rest were passengers or operators of other vehicles.

Speeding was the leading cause of fatal crashes, linked to 146 deaths (37%). Driving against traffic or into oncoming lanes was responsible for 90 deaths (23%), while reckless driving accounted for 65 fatalities (16%).

In 2024, Costa Rica recorded more than 500 traffic-related deaths, with motorcyclists representing 53% of victims.

Authorities are urging the public to help improve road safety by reporting reckless drivers to the emergency hotline at 9-1-1.

MOPT is the government agency responsible for enforcing traffic laws and promoting road safety nationwide.
