Costa Rican security officials destroyed more than 1.3 million rounds of ammunition on Tuesday, the Ministry of Public Security (MSP) said.

Specialized teams from the General Directorate of Armament (DGA) carried out the destruction in high-temperature furnaces under controlled conditions. The Organization of American States’ Program of Assistance on Control of Arms and Munitions (PACAM) certified that the process met international standards.

Authorities said most of the ammunition had been seized from criminal groups during police and judicial operations and had been held at the National Arsenal. Obsolete state-owned rounds,  those worn out, deteriorated, past their service life, or linked to outdated weapons, were also destroyed.

A judge from the Public Prosecutor’s Office authorized the operation in accordance with national weapons-control protocols. The Fire Department provided operational support and enforced strict safety measures at every stage.

Officials said the disposal strengthens Costa Rica’s commitment to disarmament and public safety and prevents dangerous or deteriorated ammunition from causing accidents or falling into criminal hands.

The MSP urged the public to report suspected possession of illegal or unregistered weapons. Confidential tips can be submitted by calling the 10-digit hotline at 800-8000-645 or the short line at 1176. Bilingual agents are available in English and Spanish.

The Ministry of Public Security oversees citizen safety, public order, police training, and anti-crime initiatives nationwide.
