A Massachusetts-based medical technology company, Insulet Corporation, announced plans to invest more than $200 million
to build a new production facility in the Savia Industrial Zone in Heredia province.

The project is expected to become the largest manufacturing investment Costa Rica has received in recent years and could generate about 3,000 direct jobs once the plant reaches full operating capacity in 2027, according to the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (Procomer).

The facility will assemble Insulet’s flagship product, the Omnipod system, a wearable device that delivers continuous insulin to people with diabetes and eliminates the need for multiple daily injections.

The Omnipod represents a new and technologically advanced product category for Costa Rica, as no other company in the country currently manufactures a similar device. Officials say the investment further strengthens Costa Rica’s position as a leading destination for the life sciences industry.

Insulet’s products are used by more than 600,000 patients in at least 25 countries. Most of the company’s manufacturing operations have historically been based in Asia.

The new facility will help diversify Insulet’s global production network, reduce supply chain risks and bring manufacturing closer to key markets in the Americas.

Insulet joins a growing list of multinational firms expanding operations in Costa Rica. Recently, Surface Solutions Group LLC, a Chicago-based technology company specializing in functional coating technologies for medical devices, announced plans to open operations in the country with an investment of more than $10 million.

Despite continued foreign investment, employment challenges remain. According to Costa Rica’s National Employment Survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Census, the unemployment rate stood at 6.6% between October and December 2025, leaving more than 147,000 people without jobs. Men accounted for about 59% of the total, or roughly 87,000 individuals.

Procomer is a state-owned agency responsible for overseeing export promotion programs, attracting foreign direct investment and providing technical and financial support for exporters.
