Surface Solutions Group LLC (SSG), a Chicago-based technology company specializing in functional coating technologies for medical devices, announced it is opening operations in Costa Rica with an investment of more than $10 million.

The company said the investment will support a new operation focused on advanced, high-precision manufacturing processes for the global medical device industry.

SSG develops low-friction, high-performance coating technologies applied to critical medical components, including guidewires, needles, electrosurgical blades, hypotubes and cannulas.

The processes are supported by automated equipment, strict quality controls and regulatory standards that meet requirements in major global markets.

The project represents a long-term investment and includes the purchase of land and construction of a new facility. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with a gradual start of operations planned for 2027, following the installation, validation and qualification of equipment.

“Costa Rica represents a strategic decision for SSG,” said Kevin Hess, president of the company. “It allows us to be closer to key customers, collaborate early in new developments, and scale coating technologies with greater agility and precision. The country offers a solid production environment and a talent base that understands the standards of the medical device industry.”

SSG is part of the Elektrisola Group, a global leader in wire solutions and specialized coatings with more than 60 years of experience, including over two decades serving the medical device sector.

The company expects to begin recruiting for technical and specialized positions, including automated equipment operators, coating personnel such as sprayers and rackers, engineers, maintenance technicians, quality professionals, and administrative and executive roles aligned with the complexity of the production process. Surface Solutions Group joins a growing list of multinational companies expanding operations in Costa Rica. Recently, German pharmaceutical company Bayer inaugurated a $200 million manufacturing plant at the Coyol Free Zone in Alajuela province, strengthening its global production network in the country.

Despite continued foreign investment, employment challenges persist. According to Costa Rica’s National Employment Survey (INEC), the unemployment rate reached 6.6% between September and November 2025, leaving more than 156,000 people without jobs. Men accounted for about 57% of the total, or approximately 89,000 individuals.
