Newmont, a Denver-based U.S. company and the world’s largest gold mining corporation, officially opened its Global Delivery Center (GDC) in Costa Rica on Thursday, launching a new operation that will create approximately 400 jobs this year.

The new center is located at the Ultrapark Free Trade Zone in Heredia Province and is part of Newmont’s global corporate operations network, the company said.

According to Newmont, the facility will provide support to its business units around the world through specialized services in finance, human resources, procurement, technology and data management.

The company said it will hire 400 employees during the year for positions in areas including finance, people management, commercial operations, Engineering & Technical Services, human resources, team leadership and other departments. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Kristian Bruce, Head of the Global Delivery Center; Melinda Hildebrand, U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica; Indiana Trejos, minister of foreign trade; and other senior Newmont executives.

Founded in 1921, Newmont owns and operates gold mines in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Australia, Ghana, Argentina, Peru and Suriname.

The company is the only gold mining corporation listed on the S&P 500 Index and employs approximately 31,600 people worldwide.

Newmont’s expansion adds to a growing number of U.S. companies increasing their presence in Costa Rica. In June, Wisconsin-based Prent Corporation, a manufacturer of custom rigid thermoformed plastic packaging, began construction of a new manufacturing facility in the Zeta Industrial Zone in Heredia Province.
