Traffic deaths in Costa Rica are climbing, with 497 fatalities reported through November 2025, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

The figure represents a sharp increase from the 440 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024, a rise of 57 fatalities.

Motorcyclists continue to be the most vulnerable road users, accounting for 259 deaths,  52% of all fatalities. Drivers made up 65 deaths (16%), cyclists 40 (8%) and pedestrians 57 (11%). The remaining victims were passengers or operators of other vehicles.

Speeding was the leading cause of fatal crashes, linked to 165 deaths (33%). Driving against traffic or into oncoming lanes caused 108 deaths (22%), while reckless driving was cited in 69 fatalities (13%).

Costa Rica recorded more than 500 traffic-related deaths in 2024, with motorcyclists again representing 53% of the victims.

Authorities are urging the public to help improve road safety by reporting dangerous driving to the 9-1-1 emergency hotline.

MOPT is the agency responsible for enforcing traffic laws and promoting road safety nationwide.
