Traffic deaths in Costa Rica are on the rise, with 427 fatalities reported as of September 2025, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

That figure marks a sharp increase from the 353 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024, a rise of 74 fatalities.

Motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable road users, accounting for 226 deaths, or 53% of the total. Drivers represented 65 fatalities (16%), cyclists 31 (7%), and pedestrians 43 (10%). The remaining victims were passengers or operators of other vehicles.

Speeding was the leading cause of fatal crashes, linked to 161 deaths (37%), followed by driving against traffic or into oncoming lanes, which caused 97 deaths (22%). Reckless driving was cited in 65 fatalities (15%).

In 2024, Costa Rica recorded more than 500 traffic-related deaths, with motorcyclists again representing 53% of all victims.

Authorities are urging the public to help improve road safety by reporting reckless drivers to the 9-1-1 emergency hotline.

MOPT is the government agency responsible for enforcing traffic laws and promoting road safety nationwide.
