Route
177, which connects the cantons of Escazú and
Alajuelita in
San José province, will be closed to
traffic for roadway improvements, the
Ministry of Public Works and
Transportation (MOPT) announced.
Authorities said a 1-kilometer (0.6-mile) section of the route will be closed 24 hours a day starting Monday, May 11, and is expected to remain shut for the next eight months.
The
project includes reconstruction of the
asphalt surface, construction of a bridge
over the
Agres River,
installation of an expanded wastewater
drainage system designed to handle
increased rainfall, construction of new
sidewalks, and repainting of road
markings.
The reconstruction of this key roadway is budgeted at more than $4 million and will be funded by the ministry.
The
Route 177 project is part of broader
national infrastructure improvement
efforts underway across the country. Recently, toll booths
along National Route 1, the main
highway connecting the capital to Juan
Santamaría International Airport
(SJO), were removed to improve traffic
flow.
MOPT
oversees Costa Ricas
roads, ports, airports and
public transportation systems.
