Three Costa Rican athletes have captured the country's first three medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026, being held in the Dominican Republic from July 24 to Aug. 8.

According to the National Olympic Committee (CONCRC), the latest medal came Sunday when taekwondo athlete Jaycee Bassett won the gold medal in the women's 46-kilogram division.

Bassett defeated Mexico's Fernanda Hernández 2-0 in the championship match.

On Saturday, taekwondo athlete Víctor Camilo Cantillano earned the silver medal in the men's individual traditional poomsae event.

Cantillano scored 8.180 points to finish second. Mexico's William Arroyo claimed the gold medal with 8.820 points, while Puerto Rico's Luis Colón took bronze with 8.160.

Also on Saturday, Jeison Rojas captured Costa Rica's third medal by winning silver in the men's 10-kilometer open water swimming event.

Rojas completed the course in 2:05:03.0, finishing second, 2 minutes, 29 seconds behind Mexico's Paulo Strehlke, who won the race in 2:02:34.0. Mexico's David Obelé placed third in 2:05:07.0 to earn the bronze medal.

CONCRC said Costa Rica's delegation includes 268 athletes competing in 28 sports.

The 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games mark the 100th anniversary of the regional competition, making it the oldest regional multi-sport event.

The performances by Bassett, Cantillano and Rojas add to a growing list of accomplishments by Costa Rican athletes on the international stage. Last month, Rhiana Mora Saint Rius won the gold medal in the women's 100-meter hurdles at the Ibero-American Athletics Championships, held at the National Sports Village in Lima, Peru.

The CONCRC is the independent governing body responsible for supporting, preparing and selecting Costa Rican athletes to represent the country at the Olympic Games and other international competitions.
