The Red Cross responded to more than 11,600 emergencies during last week’s Holy Week holiday, reflecting a surge in incidents as thousands of people traveled across the country.

Holy Week, one of the busiest travel periods of the year, typically sees government offices close and many private businesses operate on reduced schedules, as required by law.
The period draws local families to beaches and rural destinations, while international arrivals also increase due to spring break tourism.

According to Red Cross data, this year’s total included more than 1,200 accidents, contributing to the overall emergency count. That figure exceeds the 10,400 emergencies reported during the same period last year.

Vehicle-related incidents accounted for a significant share of accidents, with 451 cases reported. Officials said this represents an increase of more than 171 accidents compared with Holy Week last year.

In total, more than 1,000 people were transported to hospitals, and 52 fatalities were reported.

Authorities also responded to a range of other incidents, including accidents at hotels, cases involving intoxicated individuals, assaults with weapons, drownings, electrical shocks
and reports of people lost in mountainous areas.

As part of its annual “Safe Holiday Vacations” campaign, the Red Cross deployed resources to high-traffic tourist destinations, including beaches, rivers and mountainous regions. Base camps operated 24 hours a day and were staffed by rescuers, paramedics and trained volunteers.

The nationwide operation included approximately 500 personnel, supported by 120 emergency and rescue vehicles, 200 roadside assistance stations, 130 beach lifeguard bases and 200 mobile units.

Officials urged travelers to take basic precautions to reduce the risk of accidents. Recommended safety measures include using proper equipment for activities such as surfing, swimming and trekking, and swimming only at beaches with lifeguards and within designated safe zones to avoid rip currents.

Authorities also advised avoiding areas with narrow or dark water channels, fewer breaking waves or visible debris moving out to sea, and consulting lifeguards about potential hazards before entering the ocean. Swimmers are encouraged to avoid going deeper than hip level.

Additional recommendations include applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50 or higher, becoming familiar with local traffic laws, avoiding driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and never leaving children unattended.

In case of an emergency, officials said, the public should call 911.

Officials emphasized that following these preventive measures can help ensure a safer holiday experience for travelers.
