Fuel prices in Costa Rica are rising following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, according to the Public Services Regulatory Authority (Aresep).

The increase follows a recent request by the state-owned Costa Rican Oil Refinery Company (Recope) to adjust domestic fuel prices in response to movements in international energy markets.

Aresep said the updated rates reflect higher costs across several pricing components calculated during fuel import negotiations conducted between April 10 and May 7. As a result, prices for the country's most widely used fuels have increased.

Costa Rica imports 100% of its finished fuel products because Recope lacks the technology needed to refine crude oil into usable fuels, authorities added.

“This increase in fuel prices in the country is a direct effect of the armed conflict in the Middle East, which has generated a rise in the price of oil, as well as in the finished products that Costa Rica imports,” said Mario Mora, a Recope representative.

Officials said the higher international oil prices have increased the cost of imported fuels, directly affecting domestic fuel rates in Costa Rica.

The new retail prices are as follows:

  • Super gasoline (RON 95): ₡753 per liter, up from ₡733, about $1.67 per liter, or roughly $6.30 per gallon.

  • Regular gasoline (RON 91 / Plus 91): ₡756 per liter, up from ₡748, about $1.68 per liter, or approximately $6.35 per gallon.

  • Diesel: ₡670 per liter, down from ₡716, about $1.48 per liter, or roughly $5.63 per gallon.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), 25-pound cylinder: ₡7,399, up from ₡7,255 about $16.44 each.

The new prices are scheduled to take effect on Monday, June 1, after publication in the official government bulletin, La Gaceta.

Aresep is the government agency responsible for setting public service rates in Costa Rica.

Recope oversees the importation, distribution and sale of fuels.
